With each trip we always take you along via our instagram reels and a blog on the angles we love to highlight and give you a deeper insight and understanding of what we lived and loved. This week we take you behind the curtain of the shirt brand BOURRIENNE designed by Cecile Faucheur.
Louis Antoine Fauvelet de Bourrienne (French pronunciation: [lwi ɑ̃twan fovlɛ də buʁjɛn]; July 9, 1769 – February 7, 1834) was a French diplomat, born in Sens. He is known primarily for his close relationship with Napoleon Bonaparte, of whom he wrote in detail in his celebrated memoirs.
Louis Antoine Fauvelet de Bourrienne
Bourrienne is famous for his Memoirs of Napoleon Bonaparte,[1] a work based on years of intimate friendship and professional association. They met at the Military Academy at Brienne in Champagne when eight years old. Napoleon recalled the famous snowball battles that he masterminded: “Unfortunately the pleasure did not last long, for we put stones in the snowballs, so that many boys were injured, among them my friend Bourrienne, and the game was forbidden”.[2]
Typically, Napoleon recalled that when they graduated in 1787 at age 15 he led in all subjects; Bourrienne recalled that Napoleon led in mathematics, while he was first in all else. Bourrienne went on to become Napoleon's confidant and accompanied Bonaparte to Egypt as his private secretary.
In 2015 entrepreneur Charles Beigbeder bought the Hôtel de Bourrienne, a forgotten jewel of the time Directoire. He is captivated by the history of the place. It is towards the future that he is looking in the restaurant. At the time of the salons, a circle of intellectuals gravitated around the Hôtel Particulier: from Talleyrand to Bonaparte in passing by Chateaubriand and Victor Hugo.
Men, already modern, debating in white shirts: a premise that inspires the concept of the brand. Collections of shirts timeless whites for men and women: the Bourrienne Paris X shirt was born.
Directoire style (French pronunciation: [di.ʁɛk.twaʁ]) was a period in the decorative arts, fashion, and especially furniture design in France concurrent with the Directory (November 2, 1795–November 10, 1799), the later part of the French Revolution. The style uses Neoclassical architectural forms, minimal carving, planar expanses of highly grained veneers, and applied decorative painting. It is a style transitional between Louis XVI and Empire.
Built from 1787, the Hôtel de Bourrienne is a unique Parisian symbol, containing interior decorations dating from the Directory, still preserved today. From 1792, it was inhabited by Fortunée Hamelin, who made the hotel a mecca for social gatherings where Bonaparte, Joséphine de Beauharnais and Madame Tallien rubbed shoulders.
Muse of the fashion of Les Merveilleuses, Fortunée Hamelin caused a sensation in all of Paris, walking one day on the Champs-Élysées, dressed in a simple flesh-colored gauze cloth, split to the hips and not concealing nothing from his chest. Malicious and impertinent, she also seduced by her intelligence and held one of the most popular salons of the time in the Hôtel de Bourrienne.
The place was then bought by Louis Fauvelet de Bourrienne, Napoleon's private secretary, who left it his name. An entrepreneur at heart, Charles Beigbeder brings the Hôtel de Bourrienne back to life through an eponymous collection, but also by opening it up to young designers.
In March 2019, Belgian designer Olivier Theyskens set up his offices and showroom on the second floor of the Hotel. A place of exchange and circulation of ideas in the image of the salons of the time.
Thomas Fuchs Collection at Le Bon Marché
Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche was the first department store in the world. It opened in 1852 in Paris at the instigation of Aristide Boucicaut and his wife Marguerite. They were both in favor of “a new kind of store that would thrill all the senses”. Combining unconventionality and elegance, this unique space designed by the architect Louis-Charles Boileau and the engineer Gustave Eiffel displayed a singular style influenced by the creative vitality of Paris’s Rive Gauche.
We are so honored that Le Bon Marché carried our products hence each time we are in Paris our loyalty to the store makes it one of the first stops on our list. Being avante garde Bon Marché always has unique brands which is where I was led to my introduction to Bourrienne. My initial investment was made in 2022 where I fell in love with the Fine Linen Sculptor Shirt.
The SCULPTEUR shirt in fine linen is a variation of our SCULPTEUR shirt in plastered linen (thick). Loose, without buttons, it can be put on and taken off freely. Its fairly low neckline makes it a shirt with a casual look that expresses itself according to the wearer's wishes. It is cut from the highest quality Belgian linen.
Two years later, I could not stop thinking about the other shirt I saw, The Comedian Shirt. To make me even more jealous one of the mist chic Parisians designer and editor Celement Le Coz had posted a photo of himself wearing the shirt I pined after for two years.
The COMEDIEN shirt is an exceptional piece from the house. It has a collar inspired by starched wing collars and a pleated bib in Brittany. A piece that requires know-how and great attention to detail. This piece is the translation of Bourrienne's values: patience, passion, and timelessness. This time I made it mine. The service at Bon Marché is consistently exquisit. I asked the sales person to please connect me to the designer. She immediately called Cecile who invited Thomas and I over to the Atelier for a tour and interview.
Cecile met the owner of the Hotel in the garden. As she tells it, she had worked for a french designer in India among other exotic places and was tapped by Charles and Carin to spearhead the design of this amazing brand. We invite you all to discover this amazing discreet brand that puts the "Q" in quality and the "S" in style.
Have a great Memorial Day Weekend and tap the link to visit their site and instagram.
