“The Bloom That Followed Me: Discovering Artist Catherine Howe”

Welcome to our ONLINE STORE  and blog.

As a barware, lighting and home accessories design company, at Thomas Fuchs Creative we specialize in handmade goods. Every week we give you a behind the scenes look at the people, places and things that inspire us.

Five years ago, I wandered through the whirlwind of Art Basel Miami—one of those places where chaos and beauty collide, and the right art finds you if you’re open enough to see it. Among all the noise, it was a single, powerful bloom that stopped me in my tracks: the work of Catherine Howe.

Mineral Spirits No 12 - 40 x 40 inches $13K

Her painting didn’t just speak—it sang. Bold, gestural flowers in full bloom, dripping with color and drama, almost defiant in their beauty. It was a piece that held space unapologetically, and something in me locked eyes with it. I snapped a few photos, as we all do, filed them away in the black hole of my camera roll, and carried on with the sensory overload that is Basel.

Fast forward to now: I’m standing in a friend’s home, drink in hand, mid-conversation, when I turn and—there it is. That same electric bloom. Catherine Howe. No plaque needed. I knew the brushstrokes, the energy. My phone buzzes and, with the kind of eerie timing the universe loves, it brings up a “memory” from exactly one year ago: the photo I’d taken of that very painting at Art Basel. Goosebumps!!!

Blue Dog No 1 - 20 x 16 inches - $3800

Howe’s work plays with the classical and the contemporary, letting flowers be both beautiful and wild. Her florals aren’t quiet or decorative—they’re alive, sometimes chaotic, always potent. They feel like exactly what we need right now. A reminder of softness with strength. Of blooming, even in disorder. Of beauty that doesn’t ask for permission.

Pink Posey - 40 x 60 inches - 8K

And the synchronicity didn’t end there. I couldn’t help but notice—those same color stories, those same saturated reds, stormy blues, and spring greens—are in our dishware. It’s as if we’ve been channeling that same spirit all along: joy in daily rituals, nature in modern form, boldness on the table. Flowers, again. Art you can eat from. Art you can live with.

Bellflower - 40 x 60 inches -$8000

Maybe that’s what Catherine Howe’s paintings are—reminders that even the most delicate things can hold power. And that sometimes, art follows you until you’re ready to really see it.

This week post The Met Gala, stop and smell the flowers.
